The targeted elements and mechanisms are derived from: (1) the disrupted connections, (2) the distorted reality, and (3) the unresolved trauma issues. Figure 8.1 shows the elements targeted for change and the central effects of each of these problem areas. With in the area of disrupted connections, the elements targeted for change are (a) the emotional inaccessibility between family members, particularly the inaccessibility of the parents, and (b) the parentification of the children. Within the area of the distorted family reality, the targeted elements are (a) the distorted world view, (b) family myths about the event, and (c) the dysfunctional rules that stem from the myths and world view. Within the area of specific trauma-related symptoms/issues, the targeted elements are (a) the reenactments and projections related to the trauma, (b) the continuing concerns about safety, (c) the survivor missions assumed by family members, and (d) the continued symptomatic behavior of affected family members.

kad osobe prežive recimo zlostavljanje kao dijete, onda se u daljnjem tijeku života većina njih posveti radu na sprječavanju istoga, jer takvu misiju shvati kao svoj životni zadatak, jer oni ovdje više nisu žrtve (victims) nego preživljeli (survivors) i postoji jasna razlika (u ovom području, mada se u prijevodu teško može naznačiti a da ne utječe na stil teksta) između žrtve i preživjeloga
