Discussion

Albertine Lucas (asker) Feb 13, 2007:
Although not 100% sure, I think it is "native" English but the text uses a jargon that is specific to the stock management software in question or to the company itself. The error messages all have to do with items, records, invoices, orders, virtual or physical warehouses, stock count, stock replenishment, truck splitting, etc. Other examples of the use of "appointment" are the lines "Appointments exist for one or more of the Items" or "Only Items without Appointments will be redistributed", which lead me to think that creating an appointment for an item could mean "assigning a task to this item" (i.e. if a consumer has ordered an item, this particular item becomes active, in other words it's entered into the stock management system = an appointment has been created for it)... so in French we could have "attribution", "événement" ou "tâche" for instance. But it's just a guess! What do you think?
Jennifer Levey Feb 13, 2007:
Is this 'native' English, or has it already been translated from some other language? (double-dutch, for example).

attribution

Given all the extra context and examples of the use of 'appointment', 'attribution' would seem the most appropriate.

I guess they're saying that a stock item has an 'appointment' with a customer - which can be cancelled (in which case the item can be redistributed), etc.

I'm just wondering if the software company has perhaps adapted this program from an earlier one - a 'meetings scheduler' for example - and forgotton to change the terminology in the user guide...
