Japanese term

地を這う

Japanese to English Bus/Financial General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
The phrase appears in 7万台の「地を這うアナリスト」 in regard to Komatsu, an earth-moving machinery company. (I am assuming that the use of 地を這う is a pun, though.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Networked Earth-moving Machines

Since "地を這うアナリスト" is the title of a Japanese business magazine, I guess you can make a free translation.

It all depends on your client whether you can make a free translation or not. I am one of the contracted translators for Forbes and Forbes always lets me make a free translation when it comes to the titles of the articles.

(analysts) crawling on the earth

Right, I guess that is a pun or a comical metaphor of those analysts to some kinds of creatires, like the machinery, which crawl on the earth surface or dig it up.

Does it make any sense in the background?

earth-shaking (or earth-moving)

I think there are many possibilities, and you can think about your own, but I like what you have originally; earth-moving, or earth-shaking.

I think what it means is that the kind of machinery that Komatsu makes are generally considered to be powerful but dumb. But ones that Komatsu makes, and the way company strategically markets, manufactures, etc., are quite intelligent, like analysts. Hence, they are "earth-shaking analysts."

This reminded me of a former prime minister, Kakuei Tanaka, who was called コンピューター付きブルドーザー.

Earth scouring analysts

I would go with something like:
'Earth-scouring analysts'
'Earth-combing analysts'
maybe
'Ground-pouring analysts'

This sounds like marketing material, so the phrase would translate like , "featuring a team of 70,000 earth-scouring analysts..."
or "network of 70,000 analysts pouring over the earth..."

...something like this.
