¿Cuá sería la traducción más apropiada en éste caso?:
"(...)Even though this was the baptism of fire for most of the troopers, the company performed in splendid fashion. ***The defending rebels*** laid down a withering fire from comanding positions."
se trata de un recuento de las acciones militares por parte de las tropas norteamericanas que participaron en la invasión de abril de 1965 en República Dominicana.

En castellano no suena bien usar la traducción literal "rebeldes defensores"

... con fuego cerrado (o como te guste) desde posiciones estratégicas (o dominantes).
Creo que aquí "defending" se refiere a las tropas (rebeldes según lo define el atacante) que fueron atacadas por ellos. En castellano me gusta más convertirlo en verbo.
Te copio un fragmento de la invasión según la Wikipedia:
"Because Bosch was in favor of nationalizing certain industries held by American corporations, many believed that the United States had supported the coup. US support of the new dictatorship was later confirmed with Operation Power Pack in 1965, where US marines was sent to crush those who tried to reestablish democracy through rebellion."
Creo que aquí "defending" se refiere a las tropas (rebeldes según lo define el atacante) que fueron atacadas por ellos. En castellano me gusta más convertirlo en verbo.
