Swedish term

Handledare

Swedish to English Medical Education / Pedagogy
The person who supervises and instructs psychologists and those studying to be psychologist in their supervised clinical practice. The problem inherent in translating this term as "supervisor" and what they do as "supervision," is that it ignores much of the teaching/instructing/mentoring aspects, which of course, are crucial. I have seen that the term preceptor (borrowed from French) is gaining currency in the US. What do you think of it? Any other ideas? This terms appears in several INTYG I am in the midst of translating.

clinical supervisor (for clinical practice)

(UK) PhD students have supervisors. Graduate students probably have tutors.
I suggest that for clinical psychologist [not psychologist!] trainees, the word "clinical supervisor" be used for their placements. For their academic training, one could use "supervisor" or "clinical tutor".
As they are assessed during their placements, perhaps (clinical) assessor could be used.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This was a difficult one, and I appeciate everyone's help. I think only clinical supervisor emphasises both the teaching and the supervision role. I didn't take turtor, as many of these clinical supervisors are not really academic staff. Indeed, for many, taking on a student is more of an occasional act."

Supervising mentor

I do understand your "problem". Perhaps supervising mentor or tutor-organisor would be approproate...

Hope I could be of help.

instructor

I would go for this general term because the word "handledare" is used in many different contexts.

faculty advisor

...is defined as a faculty member appointed to mentor and guide a student through the completion of a graduate degree.
So this might do the trick... or is it too "stuffy"?

Tutor

When I was at university such a person was called a tutor. There are over 21,000 Google hits for handledare+tutor, among which see first URL below which translates "tutor" into many different languages (incl. Swedish = handledare), also second URL and many others.

agree Catherine Brix : Sounds good to me, too
