Waste canvas, a loose weave canvas is used as a guide for working cross stitch on plain fabric. Once the cross stitch is complete, the canvas threads are loosened by spraying with water or by agitating the threads, and then removing withe tweezers.

I have no idea what نفائي means, really. I just made it up. ;) I was hoping a native speaker might be able to improve on it. The English original is odd; I'm not entirely sure what it means and why they chose those terms. I think it means something like "canvas that is intended to be waste, i.e. only used during construction, then discarded."

maybe something like qawaam mu'aqqat li-nasj? I think you're going to need a descriptive semantic equivalent rather than a translation.

Hmm, this is a tough one. An American would not understand "waste canvas", but could google it. That's probably not the case for your readers; would they understand "kanva mu'aqqatah?" I would try to include something suggesting "loom", "matrix", or "armature", since that's the function of the waste canvas. kanva mu'aqqatah ka-minwaal? Or minwaal kanvasiy mu'aqqatah? In any case, I think you need a phrase that explains the concept. Hope that helps.

| Thanks for your useful link, input and suggestion. I agree with you. The word "waste" describes the canvas status after being removed, so any translation of the word into Arabic would indicate that the canvas is a waste itself or being in a bad condition. Hence I'll resort to use an adjective that refers to the real purpose & usage of this type of canvas regardless of the word waste used in the source expression. I suggest "كنفا مؤقتة" canva mu'aqqatah. What do you think? |
