German term

Lofthaus

German to English Tech/Engineering Real Estate
I am translating an article from FOCUS about property in various German cities - does anyone know a good English term for the above? I don't think it translates neatly into English and was going to put in a note: if anyone knows otherwise, I would love to have a few suggestions!

Z.E. Ball Apr 3, 2008:
Thanks. Am glad I could help....sometimes KISS is the best solution.
Hilary Davies Shelby Mar 31, 2008:
erm - "conversation" should, of course, be "conversion" - sorry! It's late ;-).
Hilary Davies Shelby Mar 31, 2008:
an industrial-type feel about it. I've skimmed the article, but don't see anything to explain the name. I'm wondering if it's one of those seemingly randomly-chosen "eingedeutscht" words which sounded good to the architect at the time?
Hilary Davies Shelby Mar 31, 2008:
Thanks J - was hoping that more info would make it easier! ;-))). It can't be a conversation, as it's built from scratch, but i'm not sure what makes it "loft"? It's not an attic, nor a warehouse, although the modern design in your example does have
Jessica West (asker) Mar 31, 2008:
Hi - thanks for everyone's responses here. Unfortunately it's one of those articles where the word is only mentioned in a heading about a couple who live an apartment like this in Berlin and who had designed it themselves. Doing some research I found this site: - http://lofthaus.info/html/Exposee_Lofthaus_Tel.030-31012999....
Seems to be a bit like a warehouse conversion..?
Hilary Davies Shelby Mar 31, 2008:
Hello! Can you give us any more information? We've run the gamut from penthouses to attics to converted warehouses here - not sure which would best fit the type of accommodation your article mentions!
Colin Rowe Mar 31, 2008:
Wasn't "Lofthouse" an England footballer? Not an oxymoron back in those days...

loft house

I'd simply stick with loft house....take a look at some of these examples.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "thanks - I think too that a "Lofthaus" is a particular style of house in its own right so I'm going to stick with loft house :)"

converted warehouse

as a suggestion
Peer comment(s):

agree SinnerAtta : That would be my choice because I just embarrassed myself by citing two links, both of which are showing pictures of "attic conversions", at least in North American parlance....

thank you
agree BirgitBerlin : I think this would be it, because the use of the word "loft" is misleading. "Loft" doesn't necessarily mean "attic" in German. Germans tend to use foreign words without knowing what they actually mean.

...and thank you, 'flat' derived from 'flat rate' is another example that makes me cringe

Here's an interesting article which even includes "Lofthaus"-type flats in London...:

penthouse apartment

a more trendy way of describing an attic
Peer comment(s):

neutral BrettMN : Except that a "penthouse" is something very specific that connotes luxury: a deluxe apartment at the top of a (usually) high building.

loft building

Might be a building with multiple lofts, in which case "apartment" wouldn't work.
Peer comment(s):

agree Paul Skidmore : w/o further context this seems appropriately generic

neutral David Moore (X) : Hmmmm... I wouldn't care to live in the accommodation you first reference defines as a "loft building".../And anyway, isn't your second one specifically American? Why, when the poster is located in the UK?

So sorry! Baaad examples ... I added these links without taking a closer look. But to be sure, we're talking about converted warehouse space. Normally in these parts, a loft conversion is partitioned warehouse space made into living quarters /studios, what-have-you.
Peer comment(s):

disagree BirgitBerlin : In Deutschland ist ein Loft aber nicht immer ein Dachgeschoss. Das kann auch eine Fabriketage sein. Das ist mal wieder ein Fall von falscher Verwendung eines englischen Wortes in der Deutschen Sprache.

Wieso, hatte jemand "Dachgeschoss" gesagt? Nicht in meiner Antwort!
disagree Hilary Davies Shelby : In the UK, a "loft conversion" is specifically the conversion of a "loft" (UK word for "attic") into living space. It doesn't refer to warehouse space. "Warehouse conversion" is quite different.
