persanófono

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
This is about the former President of Afghanistan, Burhanuddin Rabbani and refers to student clashes between Communists and Islamic leaders in the 60s:

"Había otro dirigente islámico más moderado, Borhanuddin Rabbaní, intelectual persanófono con antecedentes sufís (personajes que han liderado después de la guerra de expulsión de los rusos y la actual guerra civil)."

I can't find any references to the word anywhere.

Discussion

Claudia Vale (asker) May 6, 2008:
Clayton, you are absolutely right. Thank you. It should be Dari for the educated classes and Pashtu or Pashto for the language of the street. Thanks for pointing this out.
Clayton Causey May 3, 2008:
Or otherwise Dari-speaking. Check the OED. Dari is "Persian spoken in Afghanistan" (the other main language there being Urdu), and Farsi is the language of Iran (which mostly matches up with what used to be Persia).
Clayton Causey May 3, 2008:
If this were a context from, say, 19th century on back, I wouldn't be writing this because the response you chose would be unquestionably correct. However, give the context, 1960's, you should either reconsider or use "Farsi-speaking" next time.

Persanophone / Parsiphone (explained below)

Claudia:

I don’t know how reliable they may be, but I did find references for “Persanophone” and “Parsiphone” :

Persanophone
I found this one in French --- but, then, it may be useful.
http://www.traversees.org/ecrire/upload/15_regler_ses_compte...

- Alors, comment tu dis ? Farsinophone ? Farsiphone ?
Comment tu les appelles ceux qui parlent le farsi ?

- Persanophone, c'est comme ça que l'on appelle une culture qui utilise la langue perse, le farsi.

Parsiphone
