German term

Leisten

German to English Tech/Engineering Textiles / Clothing / Fashion Shoes
From a text about different types of leather shoes:

Halbschuhe mit offener Schnürung auf lang gezogenen spitzen oder runden Leisten

I know that Leiste(n) can mean a shoemaker's last, but it seems to be part of the shoe here.
Proposed translations (English)
3 +1 toe (of the shoe)

Discussion

Lori Dendy-Molz May 7, 2008:
@David: if you do a 'find' for 'Leisten' on the page I referenced you'll see several references, all of which refer to the shape of the toe.
David Moore (X) May 7, 2008:
Lori, which if the 30,000 or so shoes/boots do you mean?
Lori Dendy-Molz May 6, 2008:
Agree with Liesl here. See this website: http://www.western-outdoor-wear.com/shop-Herren.html

toe (of the shoe)

Depending on if the target audience is a general audience (like in a marketing context), I might suggest this more general term.

I think the "spitze Leisten" and "runde Leisten" here are simply referring to shoes with a "pointed toe" and a "round toe."

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "As the text is aimed at a fairly general readership (the article is to appear in a fashion magazine), I decided to go with the more general term here - thanks to everyone for your help."

agree John Dale D.D. : "cleats" - the spikes in golf shoes or round "things" screwed into the underneath of football boots
