Italian term

dare scarico delle gestione

Italian to English Bus/Financial Management
From the agenda for a shareholders' meeting.
The sentence is:
"L'assemblea ordinaria.....delibera di approvare il bilancio relativo all’esercizio 2007, nel suo insieme e nelle singole appostazioni, così come predisposto dal Consiglio di Amministrazione, al quale viene dato ampio scarico della propria gestione."

The agency suggested that it means that the board of directors be discharged from responsibility for their management. Maybe that's right, but it just sounds crazy to me - how can they get away with that?
Proposed translations (English)
5 +1 discharge

Discussion

Patricia Crotty (asker) Jul 31, 2008:
Hi Grace - well as it happens I had to deliver and had actually used your answer in my translation as it sounded more feasible! (and if you had answered 'formally' I'd have given you the points!). The only thing that bothered me was that it seems to be reading too much into the paragraph, so just from a purely practical viewpoint it would make more sense if the discharge (and we're even presuming from responsibility here - it's not mentioned anywhere) applied to the contents of this paragraph only. Dunno. Anyhow thanks again for your help!
Grace Anderson Jul 31, 2008:
We'll just have to agree to disagree, then.
Patricia Crotty (asker) Jul 31, 2008:
Thanks to Tom and Grace for your input! However I'm going to close without giving points because the only answer given doesn't answer the question and the explanation given is off the mark.
After more chewing it over, I think what it actually means is that it's discharging/releasing the board from their responsibility with respect to the decision to approve the financial statements (basically responsibility now lies with the shareholders' meeting).

Oh, I also want to note that the title should read 'dare scarico della gestione'.
Grace Anderson Jul 29, 2008:
Hi Patricia, the term of office of the members of the Board of Directors often terminates on approval by the Shareholders' Meeting of the financial statements - they are thus "discharged" from their management responsibilities.
Tom in London Jul 29, 2008:
Can't you work something out from the answer given in the glossary? The Board is being given full discharge to run things as they see fit.
Patricia Crotty (asker) Jul 29, 2008:
Obviously I already saw that 'discharge' was in the glossary and as I said the agency already used the term discharge. First of all I can't really see the connection between my question and the previous question asked, and second of all, I'm not sure how you can get from 'discharge' to 'discharge of responsibility' (more than possible that I'm just thick/out of it today and am missing something completely obvious)
