Discussion

Nicole Schnell Aug 18, 2008:
You don't speak German, yet you want to translate the title of a movie into German? Thanks in advance for clarification. :-)
Karin Maack Aug 17, 2008:
You are helping the director to find a name in German although you don't speak German? Is that correct? - Hm.
Anja C. Aug 17, 2008:
sorry... :-)
Daniel Ganor (asker) Aug 17, 2008:
This is a feature film. Please write in English, I don't speak German...
Anja C. Aug 17, 2008:
Handelt es sich um einen Dokumentarfilm od. einen Spielfilm?

Wörtliche Übersetzung hilft nicht viel, als erstes fällt mit
Gross und gewichtig,
Weit und breit,
Schweres Leben,
Last der Grösse,
Pfundige Geschichte ein.
Brainstorming wird sicherlich noch viele andere gute Lösungen bringen.

Big Story - Eine kolossale Geschichte aus dem (ge)wichtigen Leben

I'd partly keep the English title.
The german part reads: "A really big/great story from [see below for explanation] life" and plays on words:
[gewichtig means heavy, wichtig means important (i.e. what's really important, what really counts in life) and "aus dem richtigen Leben" (from real life) is also implicitly understood because it sounds almost the same]

PS: I'm suggesting this answer after having read the plot summary on IMDB.

…while "kolossal" refers to the Sumo fighters, of course…;-)

btw: "kolossal" could be replaced by "pfundig" if you're looking for a more colloquial expression and yet another play on words: Pfund = pound / pfundig = great, swell (in the figurative sense)

Big Story

Wie im IMDB angegeben.
Da noch in Produktion (laut Angaben) gibt es wohl noch keinen offiziellen deutschen Titel.

You work with Shanon Maymon?

I agree with Anja - it could be "Big Story" like the original. It's easy to understand and keeps the double meaning.

Alternative: "Eine runde Sache/Geschichte" / "Eine wirklich runde Sache/Geschichte".
It means "a perfect thing" (like a perfect cicle) but also "a chubby/ball-shaped thing"; often used referring to pumpkins.

edit: ciRcle, not cicle, sorry.

I am helping the director to find a name in German...

agree Anja C. : Ich würde den englischen Titel im Deutschen beibehalten…

agree germaninterpret : Vielleicht sollte man mit sowas aufpassen, bis der offizielle deutsche Titel rauskommt, und den englischen Titel behalten :}

So wie es aussieht, entsteht hier gerade der deutsche Titel... (den ich im Original beibehalten würde) - Willkommen beim Brainstorming!

what about: "Das pralle Leben" ?
;-)

"Das pralle Leben" would be my first choice so far...

--------------------------------------------------

"Dicke Freunde" would be another good one. Literally 'fat friends', but it's a play on words and means 'close friends' at the same time.

Note added at 12 hrs (2008-08-17 20:16:49 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

'Das pralle Leben' means 'Life to the full'. 'Prall' is a play on words, means 'chubby, 'plump', 'stout', 'sturdy' (see leo dictionary for reference)

Note added at 13 hrs (2008-08-17 20:44:46 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

"Das Ringen mit den Pfunden" could be another possible solution. Word game, 'ringen' means 'wrestling', but the whole phrase means 'fighting obesity', 'trying to lose weight'

"Wuchern mit Pfunden" or "Mit den Pfunden wuchern" might be another one. Would be a word game on showing off your weight with pride, making use of your weight, turning it into an advantage...

--------------------------------------------------

another good one would be "Pfundskerle", play on words, means 'great guys', obvious pun... 'Kerle' = 'real men'

...'real men' who are proud of their extra kilos

agree Zea_Mays : Der Fragesteller spricht nicht Deutsch, die Vorschläge also lieber erklären. (Das pralle Leben klingt nicht schlecht...)///Habe mich gerungen :o) / Pralles Leben: "a bulging/fulfilled life" oder ähnl.?

Danke Anja. Stimmt, mit dem O-Titel davor vielleicht sogar besser. Die Frage ist jetzt ja sowieso zu. Hatte mich ohnehin gefragt wie jmd. ohne Deutschkenntnisse eine Antwort auswählen würde - schon leicht skurril...und dann gar kein feedback, naja ;-)
