een miljard

This is the correct translation of "one billion" into Afrikaans. I am not sure where "one milliard" comes from though, but it is related to the French : "milliard".
Example sentence:

Daar is agt miljard mense op aarde.

There are eight billion people on earth.

agree Johan Venter : Yup, 1 miljard = 1,000 miljoen//To Julian: One billion in the US is 1,000,000,000 and in the UK and SA it is 1,000,000,000,000, so your statement is not always correct

Yes, important note! If you translate from American English to Afrikaans, it becomes "1 Billion = 1 Duisend Miljoen" (American).
agree Julian Pereira (X) : one billion = een biljoen

agree Samuel Murray : When translating "billon" into Afrikaans, find out what it means. Don't just assume based on the supposed origin of the text. British (and South African) publications are not consistent in this.
