Comment: "Sebbene le altre risposte si riferiscano, a quelle che alcuni casi sono le manifestazioni piu' vistose del sistema clientelare in Italia (cronyism), sono queste delle specifiche incarnazioni del sistema clientelare.
L'utilizzo che se ne fa nella lingua italiana anche per indicare il rapporto
di scambio di favori tra politici ed elettori e' resa solo da "patronage system". Questo termine, inoltre, mantiene, dal punto di vista etimologico, il legame con il rapporto patronus-cliens dell'antica roma da cui la parola "clientelare" ed il sistema stesso deriva.

... it must be in inverted commas, to work as a translation from Italian because Italy doesn't have schools like Eton, Harrow, Westminster etc. but the idea's the same,

: Its nigh thirty years since I lived in the UK, but the "old boy network" doesn't pervade every nook and cranny of society like "clientelismo" does here. I mean even my dentist wants to know which side I'm on!!! Which scares me to death naturally.
