an f-stop increment from f: 1.2 to f: 16 means reducing the amount of light that enters the lens, so incrementing the F-stop reduces the aperture.

The truth is that the meaning of 1 or 1/2 or other fraction f-stop increments means that the diaphragm is turned (closing the lens) according to the graduations of the notches marked on the lens and that represent a half or a quarter or an eighth of the previous aperture.
