Discussion

Lianne van de Ven Dec 3, 2008:
agree with Kate Dit is wat een verzekeringsdeskundige me net terugschreef:
"In de verzekeringswereld doen wij onze uiterste best het zo moeilijk mogelijk te maken voor mensen om te begrijpen wat ze nu eigenlijk kopen ;-) In dit geval geloof ik inderdaad dat ‘doorberekenen’ het juiste woord is." Ik denk dat het een verbastering van doorberekenen is. Blackmail als doel lijkt me wat vergegrepen voor onze Nederlandse cultuur, maar verdoezelend taalgebruik is natuurlijk prima.
Kate Hudson (X) Dec 3, 2008:
strange wording This might be taken to mean that in light of the previous sentence the premiums will be recalculated taking all risk factors into account in setting the premium rate, i.e. the rate will remain the same (hence they will not be imposing additional charges) because where the premium was previously low due to low risk factors and high for high risk they are now going to retain the same premium for everyone (but I would personally seek clarification from the client) on these points.
Ken Cox Dec 3, 2008:
(i.e. due this circumstance) -- but the last part of this trio must be regarded as an interpretation (Dutch texts often require considerable reading between the lines).
Ken Cox Dec 3, 2008:
Thanks. IMO the logic of the source text is (a) our rates and conditions are intended to enable us to correctly assess risks, but (b) due to the legislation we are no longer able to do this, and (c) we will not impose any additional charges as a result...
Jon O (X) (asker) Dec 3, 2008:
Here is the Dutch text which comes before the sentence in question:
Ken Cox Dec 3, 2008:
logical connection to the sentence beginning 'In deviation from our...' is far from evident. What is the Dutch source text?
Ken Cox Dec 3, 2008:
The source text as given seems to be internally contradictory: first it says that the rates and conditions are designed to enable correct risk assessment, and then it says that the risk cannot be assessed, and as Texpertise has pointed out, the...
Textpertise Dec 3, 2008:
continuing: multiply the other risk factors together to arrive at a much higher tariff for the insurance? This is just a guess on my part. You will have to see if it fits your context.
Textpertise Dec 3, 2008:
When the insurance company say "we will not charge any costs for this", do they mean for the proposer to undergo a "voluntary" medical examination because without it they cannot properly assess their risks of the policy and they will therefore multiply
Jon O (X) (asker) Dec 3, 2008:
That's the end of the section unfortunately. It then goes on to another matter.
Textpertise Dec 3, 2008:
I'm as puzzled as you are. Maybe one or two sentences following the requested one may throw some light on it?
Jon O (X) (asker) Dec 3, 2008:
the preceeding text is as follows:
"The rates and conditions developed by XXXXXX have been geared to allow one to correctly assess the risks associated with the insurance in question. As a result of the Medical Examinations Act, an insurer may no longer carry out investigations into the health of candidate participants and is therefore no longer able to assess the risks which follow from the insurance. In deviation from our policy, we will not charge any costs for this.

Textpertise Dec 3, 2008:
This algebra term usually denotes "multiplying through" the various parts of an equation. This does not seem to fit your context. Please give more context unless something like "all factors of the tariff are multiplied through with each other" makes sense

multiplying through

As Sindy has suggested that you might like to stick with my solution, I guess I ought to enter it as a possible answer. It sounds to me as if what you have here is the insurance company trying to blackmail the proposer into submitting to a voluntary medical examination because otherwise their assessed premium will be calculated less favourably, possibly by a geometric calculation, but in any event more expensive for the proposer. It is possible that the wording has been made intentionally vague by the company in order to avoid this "blackmail" being too obvious.

This is simply the geometric mean rate of return. It is calculated
by taking the nth root of a series of intermediate returns over
n periods. For instance, if the returns over four successive periods
are 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% say, the TWRR is given by:
TWRR = ( (1.01) x (1.02) x (1.03) x (1.04) ) - 1
= 0.024939 (or 2.4939%) "

IMO you might actually stick to Textpertise's option: "multiplying through" :

Peer comment(s):

neutral Textpertise : This relates to assessment of portfolio risk. I think the target text relates to assessment of an individual's insurance premium. "Premium" used in different senses entirely. I am dubious.

The "premium" is irrelevant: it's the calculation method that matters. "Doorvermenigvuldigen" is a geometric calculation method.

(mutually) extrapolated/projected with adjustments for contingencies/

cf. durchrechnen of industrial pensions in DE & AT! Allowance and adjustment is made for e.g. long, pension-ineligible maternity breaks and unforeseen contingencies as well as mishaps.

Example: a pension assumes 40 years' working life. The employee takes 2 years' maternity leave or goes on a 1-year world trekk. The pension is 'multiplied through' at a correspondingly lower ratio.

Example sentence:

researchers have been forced to extrapolate contingencies of extant life backward. in time. Such reversal of the historical process is methodologically ...
