Hi, a friend of mine wants to buy an art book on the Internet and asked for my help because she needs to make sure the pictures in it are "con stampa tipografica" and not "stampa applicata". Unfortunately I'm no expert and since the book is not cheap and is meant to be a present I want to make sure she gets what she pays for. Does anybody know what she should ask?

stampa tipografica is letterpress printing.
Although not sure about "stampa applicata", it could be some form of offset or flexography printing.
However, letterpress is probably the oldest technique available and still in use and from what I understand, the quality of print is not very high. So, I wonder why your friend is particularly interested in this technique for an expensive art book. Or is could there be some confusion?

In this case, it is not the actual printed text that is raised, but the printing plate used that is raised (the terminology can be confusing). See below for details...
Letterpress, ... also known as Typographic Printing Technique, this commercial printing technique, includes production of many copies of an image by repeated direct impression of an inked, raised surface against sheets or a continuous roll of paper.
Letterpress Printing Process
The letterpress printing process involves printing images by the "relief" type printing plates where the image or printing areas are raised above the non-printing areas. Ink is applied on the rollers, which further pass it onto a separate ink-bed where a fresh film is picked for the following sheet of paper. A sheet of paper is rapidly pressed onto a type and swung back again and finally removed, followed by insertion of a new sheet/roll of paper.

Looked at the refs. below. It seems you may be on the right track -- it does say that direct prntg is also known as application printing and also mention gravure printing.
Although not sure about "stampa applicata", it could be some form of offset or flexography printing.

I had thought of letterpress, but then I found a few references indicating this technique is used to obtain a raised effect (relief printing) which I don't think can be the case for images... I believe the whole point is that the book in question is supposed to be a limited edition, so I guess this detail should ensure its "qualità artigianale" (it's supposed to be hand-bound, etc...). |

Antico metodo di stampa ormai utilizzato solo per particolari lavori in cui i grafismi (parte stampante della forma) sono in rilievo e speculari (illeggibili) rispetto alle parti non stampanti. Sì, in effetti questo glossario di Polimoda è fantastico! Non so bene cosa dirti, infatti non ho fornito la risposta. La tua amica deve richiedere la stampa del libro in un paese straniero, immagino, e ha bisogno del corrispondente in inglese? Io, dopo averle fornito le varie definizioni che siamo riusciti a mettere insieme, ti direi di suggerle di chiedere alla tipografia quali tipi di stampa forniscono per le immagini, sicuramente il metodo "tipografico" è il più costoso e pregiato.
