The baccalauréat (pronounced [bakaloʁeˈa]), often known in France colloquially as le bac or le bachôt, is an academic qualification which French and international students take at the end of the lycée (secondary or high school). It was invented under Napoleon I in 1808. It is the main diploma required to pursue university studies.
Much like British A-Levels or American high school diplomas, the baccalauréat allows French and international students to obtain a standardised qualification, typically at the age of 18. This then qualifies holders to work in certain areas, or go on to tertiary education or acquire some other professional qualification or training.

Baccalaureate are prea multe semnificatii ca sa poti sa risti sa-l utiilzezi, daca citeste un canadian francofon zice ca e Bachelor's Degree :)

European Framework of Qualification
If you're translating the qualification for the European market, you have to bear in mind that the high school diplomas vary. For example, the equivalent of a high school diploma in the UK is the A Levels, in Ireland is the Leaving Cert, and so on. It would be worth linking the somewhat generic title of high school diploma to the European Framework of Qualifications. While alignment of national qualifications to the European framework is voluntary at the moment, I know that most western countries have aligned theirs already. I also think that it won't be long until it becomes mandatory.
