Concerning Jericho, see the references in the New Bible Dictionary and in particular those referring to Professor E Sellin. In 1908 he excavated Jericho and J Politeyan (Biblical Discoveries in Egypt, Palestine and Mesopotamia (Elliot Stock, 1922), p. 120) records ‘Dr Sellin showed a well-preserved city wall built upon a foundation of loam and gravel 3 or 4 feet thick. Upon this a wall of stones and rubble, 61⁄2 to 8 feet thick, and 16 feet high; upon this again a brick wall, 8 feet high, and 61⁄2 feet in thickness was reared, making a total of 24 feet. This wall ***bulged outward***, thus making the scaling of it impossible.’
