Italian term

raso di metallo filato

Italian to English Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion list of a queen's wardrobe for a museum
I'm not sure how to translate this. The full description of the item in question is: Abito lungo scollato con strascico, senza maniche, di taffetas crêpe color avorio operato a disegno di grandi foglie e fiori esotici. Fodera dello strascico di ***raso di metallo filato*** color argento.

Metal thread satin? Sounds funny. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance

Discussion

wordgirl Mar 25, 2009:
lining of the satin train in silver-hued spun... metal?? (can you IMAGINE how heavy that would have been!)

Hi Susan, hi Angela! VERY interesting idea that Angela has - any way to check on the actual material making up the train and its lining? A pic, perhaps?? (I know, I know, that we should always be so lucky, right?) I have to say, though, that I have "issues" with 'yarn', unless it is something wooly (real or synthetic), but maybe that's just me... I CAN say that the fileria here in Milan that I occasionally translate for uses the word "thread" for non-wooly filati (but then again they hire me because they don't speak English!) ;)
GREATLY looking forward to any and all further brainwaves and to seeing how you eventually resolve this one, Susan! :)
Have a great day, ladies!

(ok, MUST get back to WORK!)
Angela Arnone Mar 23, 2009:
Susan, I'm re-reading this in the light of wordgirl's analysis and I think the Italian should be taken as "lo strascico di raso ha una fodera di metallo filato color argento", in which case it will be a silver spun metallic yarn lining.

metallic yarn satin

Hi Susan.
I think it's "metallic yarn" you're after.
I get a convincing number of hits for that.

spun metal satin

OK, there are NO G hits anywhere in the world for "spun metal satin".
BUT, hey, my closet is hardly teaming with metal satin garments, either; it is not your average garden-variety fabric!
I have used "metal filament satin" before, but that is satin with the odd metal thread interspersed to give it a bit of shine... so that's not it.
So we have to think what "metallo filato" is. "Filato" means made into a thread, or spun, so... satin that is made out of spun metal! NO g hits. not anywhere, not even from China!
HOWEVER, "spun gold satin" does get a number of hits (below are some, to give you an idea), and everybody knows what spun gold, is, as well, so how about using a modified version of that "old concept" to express this relatively "novel concept"...voilà, spun metal satin :)

here are some "spun gold satin" pages (sorry, they are mostly wedding pages, so prepare yourself for a lot of "the bride wore..."):

ooh, and here is a spun silver (fabric, not really satin, I don't think):

OK, enough already! Have a great day, and I hope this helps!
Note from asker:
Thanks, WG, for all your efforts - more than the translation is worth, I'm afraid, but it could be useful to future searchers too. Thanks a lot!

neutral Angela Arnone : I actually think we're misreading the Italian and that the raso is the fodera, which has a spun metallic silver colour lining ... waddaya think?

Hi Angela! :o) OK,AGREE re "spun metal"- taken OUT of context. BUT, IMHO, in this v particular CONTEXT (which may well include a few spun gold items) "spun metal+SATIN" renders the idea w/o risking confusion; many words, w/o context, have varied meanings
