Spanish term

camino de pista

Spanish to English Other Tourism & Travel
These are driving directions.

Pasados 2 kilómetros de Salo tomar a la izquierda el camino de pista, dirección a Castelltallat.

I know "pista" can be "trail" but in a car?
TIA!

Discussion

Paula Sepúlveda (X) Apr 29, 2009:
Direction Knowing that the directions are for reaching a "masia" or country house is useful, but the part of the text we are discussing seems to indicate a "pista" previous to the actual access to the house, which could indeed be car/tractor made and full of holes. I now also realize that the text does not say "pista asfaltada", also commonly used in the case of minor roads.
margaret caulfield Apr 29, 2009:
Track road Hi, Sherry! "Track road" is a very commonly used term for the type of road I mentioned in my answer. As opposed to "track", it is actually a "car-made" road, i.e. made by cars consistently going to wherever, in this case, the rural house.
Noni Gilbert Riley Apr 29, 2009:
Not to my ears I'm afraid. The description sounds quite probable though!
Sherry Godfrey (asker) Apr 29, 2009:
track road Asking about the road quality may be difficult. I think it would take a long chain of people to get to the original writer of this part of the text. :) "Track road" may be an option for a road that is less 'finished'. Although I have to admit I haven't heard it used much. Is it common?
Noni Gilbert Riley Apr 29, 2009:
Except ... ...that track might give drivers more warning about pothole content! Don't know how ready British visitors are to hurl their vehicles down along such surfaces. Also if you are looking for a minor road, you might ignore anything which is not metalled. Any chance of asking about the surface quality?!
Sherry Godfrey (asker) Apr 29, 2009:
Hello! It is directions to a casa rural in northern Spain. "Minor road" may be a good option...
Paula Sepúlveda (X) Apr 29, 2009:
rural I just saw this after posting. Galicia is full of pistas. They used to be dirt but are slowly all becoming asphalt roads. Catalonia has them too.
Noni Gilbert Riley Apr 29, 2009:
Where are we going? Are we heading for something pretty rural Sherry? The reason I ask is that it would seem feasible to have a dirt track / unmetalled road etc to reach, say, a nature reserve, or a casa rural, but not an airport!

small country lane

It sounds like this is a junction with a signpost pointing to "Castelltallat"; it sounds like a small country lane like there are lots of in Wales or Cornwall, which I know well.

agree Sandra Holt : We obviously think on the same lines Deborah. I think this sounds much more inviting.

yes indeed Sandra, thanks so much! :-) Deb
agree neilmac : Although perhaps this sounds a smidgeon too English/British for a Catalonian byway :/

aha, byway, perfect!!!!! Cheers Neil :-) Deb
agree Simon Summers : I have to agree - it sounds like a country lane and therefore may or may not be asphalted. As long as they go along it in the direction of Castelltallat ... they´ll get there!! :)

minor road / track

Pista can refer to a minor asphalted road, with no painted lines. They are common in rural areas and are used by vehicles and walkers.

track road

This tends to be a road actually marked out by the tyres of cars that have steadily passed, creating a track with no asphalt but with the natural clay in the area.

side road

UK English: a minor road branching off of a main road.
I have to get home along some of these, and my house is on a non-asphalted dirt track (camino rural) full of potholes that gets washed away if it rains too heavily;)

The cottage is nestled amongst tranquil terraces of orange and lemon trees, with a small stream running in front which keeps you cool at the height of the Murcian summers. Due to it's mountainous rural location there is no light pollution. ***Dirt road access*** means that the odd tractor might disturb your peace as you lay by the pool, watching an Eagle glide the thermals.

Sanctuary de Maria de Foix (10 mins)
As you come down the hill from the house on the left hand side is a **dirt road** leading up to the Sanctuary (it is sign posted).

As we had driven for many hours to get there, we were determined to find another way to get to that place. So we turned left on the next junction, clearly signposted. After the first few hundred metres the tarmac road turned to a **dirt road***. The rain was really bad, but as we were just a few km from Molina, we decided to continue on that road.

The idea of "pista" is that it is untarmacked, "no asfaltada". In fact, it reinforces the idea of "camino". To make it explicit in English, I would use "untarmacked".
