German term
wachfreier Betrieb
German to English
Tech/Engineering
Engineering (general)
Insbesondere die Tatsache, dass bereits im Jahre 2006 wie auch im Jahre 2008 Grundlagerschäden am Grundlagerzapfen Nr. 2 auftraten wie auch am Grundlagerzapfen Nr. 1 und dass der GL den wachfreien Betrieb in 2007 gecancelt hatte, spricht dafür, dass die Mängel durch einen Mangel im Motor verursacht wurden, nicht durch die Kurbelwelle.

Note from asker:
I am thinking "unmonitored operation" would be best...comments? |

: It can also be translated as "unwatched operation" but "unsupervised" is supersior.

Discussion
One of the references I provided implies, like other Google hits (e.g.,
http://www.patent-de.com/20060216/DE102004036005A1.html),
that "wachfreier Betrieb" is not the same as "nicht überwachter Betrieb".
In fact, "überwachter Betrieb" can be "wachfrei" at the same time.
The origin of "your" term may be the marine term "wachfrei", meaning that you don't have to stand watch.
This would explain why "ohne ständige Beaufsichtigung" is used as a synonym for
"wachfrei".
this is for a crankshaft "Kurbelwelle" that GL was inspecting in order to approve it for use in a ship motor
