Discussion

James (Jim) Davis Jun 16, 2009:
Censorship I strongly feel that a translator should not "tone down" vulgarity, because she/he feels "it is not necessary" (I would say the same about exaggeration).A translator can always negotiate things with an author and even refuse to translate, but this is not just about censorship. On TV when I see Italian versions of telefilms that I know well in the original English version, very often all the colourful, rich language, which is often one of the great attractions of some series, has been clinically removed. The result is hardly worth watching and very disappointing.
Barbara Toffolon (X) Jun 16, 2009:
It depends on the language Saying that - tutto va a puttane - seems less offensive that "fucked up"....or maybe only to me?
Colin Rowe Jun 16, 2009:
Just wondering... ...if this question should possibly have been entered under the category "May be found offensive".

everything falls through

This is a version that leaves out the "heavy words".
Peer comment(s):

agree texjax DDS PhD : francamente è la soluzione che preferisco, perché "tutto va a puttane" non ha la stessa connotazione volgare di diverse altre risposte

Grazie doc. in fatti questa persona parla dell'importanza di un amico.....anche nei momenti piu duri....e pertanto usare una parola piu volgare non necessariamente darebbe piu enfasi a questi momenti...non in questo caso.

it all goes to cock

very idiomatic

I remember hearing this in the film 'The Full Monty', not that it has any sexual innuendo here, of course.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Mirra_ : Non va bene perché non ha certo la stessa diffusione dell'espressione italiana (Ghits 11.100): google da solo 17 risultati! R:1 tu hai proposto un'altra cosa 2 capisci bene che dire 'andare a puttane' e 'go to cock' non sono paragonabili... eh... :

Va bene invece xche viene usato in piu' variazioni, es. "all to cock" offre quasi 5.000 Ghits

everything's going to hell

This is my reflex reaction translation.

In view of Bruna's (Texjax's) comment "when everything goes to hell, it is a bond which goes beyond heaven and hell" is not possible, nor is anything with "goes". I can find nothing with just precisely the same level of the vernacular, so a compromise is necessary:

"when your whole life is in pieces it is a bond which goes beyond heaven and hell"
Peer comment(s):

agree Colin Rowe : Also good. (I have to say that, as it is precisely the answer I nearly entered, myself!)

neutral Mirra_ : non corrisponde bene all'espressione italiana, secondo me

I felt this was the right compromise between too offensive and too polite for this phrase in Italian. The "F" word in English is the strongest there is in offensiveness.
agree delveneto : Very nice, good taste.
6 hrs
neutral texjax DDS PhD : Ciao Jim, sarebbe un'ottima soluzione se nella stessa frase non ci fosse il riferimento all'inferno e al paradiso, che credo vada mantenuto (lo trovo stupendo) e che con la tua proposta forse si perderebbe (per evitare una ripetizione).

Ciao Bruna AAAaasaaahhhhhai ragione! It was a reflex translation.
