Portuguese term

Insubsistência Ativa

insubsistência do passivo.

Alguém poderia me ajudar???

Discussion

AlexMiranda Jul 4, 2009:
Thanks, Jack. One of my accounting books defines asset as a right to use an economic resource, so that makes me think that it always has a positive value by itself, though the net effect can be negative. Seems like we are on the same page.
jack_speak Jul 4, 2009:
negative net asset Alex, you are exactly correct, I think. I had the same idea, that an asset with a negative net value would be due to having a liability attached to it, for example, a property where the government issued a ruling that required expensive clean-up due to unlawful waste disposal. The cost of the clean-up could be higher than the property's book value as a result of this environmental liability. You could sell the land under a contract whereby the purchaser assumes all of the liability.
AlexMiranda Jul 4, 2009:
I'll stick to my answer At least for US English
Marcio Tondin (asker) Jul 4, 2009:
Yes, it is a liability that no longer exists! That lead us to the following terms: Extinguished Liabilities, Unrecognized Liabilities, Derecognized Liabilities, Purged Liabilities.
What do you guys think?
AlexMiranda Jul 4, 2009:
If it is a liability that no longer exists I think that the term is the one in the IFRS document.

Jack, my knowledge of accounting is mostly from having to make sense of it, but I am not a trained accountant, so I got very intellectually curious about negative assets. I thought that if an asset were to have a net negative effect on the accounts it is because of the liabilities attached to it. Can you post a reference to the idea of a negative asset? I would like to read about it to fill my gaps.
Marcio Tondin (asker) Jul 4, 2009:

jack_speak Jul 3, 2009:
vamos deixar pro Marcio decidir Assets = Liabilities + Owners' Equity
Marlene Curtis Jul 3, 2009:
NOT an asset Just a correction.
Marlene Curtis Jul 3, 2009:
No an asset Insubsistência Ativa: Reforçando, a palavra "Ativa" não significa do Ativo, e sim, efeito positivo.

jack_speak Jul 3, 2009:
Asset An asset can have a positive value or a negative net value. In this case, the best I can think of so far is "purged asset," where the net asset value is debited from the left side of the balance sheet so that the equity balance is credited (increases) on the right side of the balance sheet. I am still searching for a better "accepted" accounting term, but the idea is that the bad asset was purged.

Extinguished Liabiliti (ies)

I have only come across this once, so I can't be more confident, but the FASB document below seems to indicate that this is the right term:

The idea here is that once a liability is extinguished, provisions for such liabilities can be freed.
