This pressure in pre-collapse Soviet era was the demand of the country's healthily growing population for basic products such as food or toilet paper which Soviet system could not provide in the required quantity/amounts.The result was a deficit in major food/products supply to the shop/stores.The whole situation was called "напряженка".
