It could indeed - but would it then be "replicate" - this report has a number of spelling mistakes.

This term actually means to take an isolated colony and culture it in a new medium. This is generally done when you have a great number of colonies and want to work with only one of them.
There are some machines to do this too, when you have a lot of picking to do:

neutral Veronica Martinez : Hi John, let me add that "stabbing" is used when you need the bacteria deep in the agarose. You "stab" the gel with some instrument. "Picking" means to pick a single colony from a dish where many colonies are growing, and steak it in a new dish. Thanks!
