German term

die Fahrt- und Haltstellung eines Signals überwachen

German to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping railways, hazard analysis

Zielsignal = destination signal
überwachen = monitor

Signalfahrtstellung = clearing a signal
Signalhaltstellung = setting a signal to stop

Signal in Haltstellung = Signal at danger, stop signal, closed position
Signal in Fahrtstellung = line-clear signal

"To monitor the clearing of a signal and its setting to stop" -> this does not sound English at all

Any ideas for improvement?

TIA

Discussion

Veronika Neuhold (asker) Sep 12, 2009:
Haltprüfung -> position? "Haltprüfung" may indicate that "Stellung" means "position" here:

to monitor the "proceed" and "stop" positions of a signal

Cf. http://www.railpage.org.au/ausrail/99march/msg02128.html

Fahrt zeigendes Signal = proceed signal
Halt zeigendes Signal = stop signal

("Stellung" can mean both "setting" and "position")

Betrifft Die Funktion von Zu-/Ablüftern ist zu überwachen [Tech.]
Quellen Ist es richtig, wenn man Zu-/Ablüftern nur als aerators uebersetzt??
The function of the aerators is to monitor.

to monitor the status of signal aspects

I'd keep it simple: to monitor the status of signal aspects

On a different note:

Zielsignal = target signal (I don't think destination signal is correct)

You could also include "halt" (or "stop") and "clear" (or "proceed) signal aspect, but I don't think it's necessary...
Note from asker:
Thank you, I haven't considered "aspect" so far. My text also includes the "Wiederfahrtstellung", so I opted for being more explicit. Any ideas on http://www.proz.com/kudoz/german_to_english/transport_transportation_shipping/3439408-wiederfahrtstellung.html ?

monitor stop and go setting of a signal

this is my spontaneous version

Think of a traffic light, where red means "stop" and green "go"!
Note from asker:
Vielen Dank. "Stop and go" war auch meine erste Spontanversion, aber in Referenztesten fand ich dann nur "proceed" und "line-clear" für "Fahrt"...

monitor the open and closed positions of a signal

UIC Railway Dictionary - Fahrtstellung: open position (signal)

My dictionary doesn't include Haltstellung, so 'closed position' is just a guess.
