Sounds like OSI reference model stuff to me. 'Trailer' or 'trailer section' would be fine in this case. I'd opt for 'trailer' myself.

Header information typically includes the receiving station’s address and control information. An error detecting code is normally included in the Trailer field.

: Had my doubts about the use of 'field' in this context at first Lianne, but on second thoughts -- and after googling 'trailer field' in combination with 'OSI' ;-) -- this term seems to be fine.

My guess was that the header and trailer are the "elements" or "components" and the field contains the actual code. Maar het geluk is met de vrijwel domme hier. Bedankt Jack.
