كورتاژ در كلمه يعني تراشيدن و خارج كردن قسمتي از بافت بدن. بنابراين براي هر قسمتي از بدن كه نياز به خارج كردن بافت يا نمونه داشته باشيد ممكن است انجام شود. در گفتار مصطلح اين كلمه در واقع خلاصه فارسي شده Dilation and Curettage يا D&C است كه به معني اتساع و بيرون آوردن جنين يا بافت داخلي رحم است.
كورتاژ ممكن است به منظور درمان يا تشخيص بيماري رحم انجام شود و تنها يكي از موارد استفاده آن خارج كردن جنين زنده و سقط عمدي است. روشهاي مختلفي براي انجام اين كار وجود دارد مانند ساكشن يا كورِت.

Technical name abortion
As Encarta says abortion is the same as miscarriage and the only difference is that abortion is a technical word.
As Dehkhoda indicates كورتاژ is a french word
کورتاژ کورتاژ. (فرانسوی ، اِ) ۞ سقط جنین با نوعی عمل جراحی ۞ و به وسیله ٔ پزشک . بیرون آوردن جنین از رحم مادر. (از لاروس )....
كورتاژ is transliteration of curettage.
