Italian term

atrofica

Italian to English Medical Medical (general) gastroscopy
This is part of a report of a patient's gastric exam (una esofagogastroduodenoscopia!). The report ends with the doctor's conclusions:

'Conclusioni: gastrite cronica ad evoluzione *strofica* in verosimile reflusso biliare duodeno-gastrico.'

It's easier to find the longer technical terms, but I don't know what to do with 'strofica'.

I tried to look up this word in the De Mauro online Italian dictionary -- and they've removed it! That is a big loss :(

Thanks for the help.

Discussion

Joseph Tein (asker) Oct 17, 2009:
strophic/atrophic I've found 474 mentions of 'strophic' gastritis in Google (only 13 in Bing) versus 160,000 mentions of 'atrophic' gastritis. I would say then that those 474 uses of 'strophic' also reflect a typo or a misreading of the word in some document.

Thank you all for your suggestions and help.
Ellen Kraus Oct 13, 2009:
Joseph, as to my suggestion, pls. see my answer following your confirmation that atrophic is being meant.I posted it under explanations.
Lirka Oct 13, 2009:
Atrophic gastritis or Type A gastritis Atrophic gastritis represents the end stage of chronic gastritis.
Joseph Tein (asker) Oct 13, 2009:
ATROPHIC!! I looked at the document again... under magnification! I have a printed copy of a pdf document that was made from a fax. The word IS "atrofica". The "a" looked like an "s".

I still would appreciate your suggestions for how to translate the "new" version: 'gastrite cronica ad evoluzione *atrofica*'

agree Alessandra Renna : I don't think it's a typo but the meaning it's the same. Maybe atrophic is more usual also in Italian

that is broken up into regular sections, like the poetry to which the term alludes. Italian MDs have quite a deep cultural education, unlike their US counterparts.
Note from asker:
Ciao Cedric. 'Strophic' is of course a much more poetic translation, and I agree that we could use more poetry in the U.S. medical system :)
