German term

Verdichten (Verdichterband/Breitenverdichten)

The text is about a packaging machine for tealights. I find that "compress" or "compact", as in "compression/compressor belt" or "width compression of the tea lights" sounds quite strange. Compression would make sense to me when they are forming the wax into tealights, but at this stage the tealights already exist and they apparently just mean "shifting 'em closer together". Any ideas on how to describe this? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

to accumulate (using an accumulation / accumulating conveyer)

You may be looking for a device similar to the one depicted in the web page below (first reference). There's also a patent on the internet that describes a separating, synchronising and accumulating device (second reference). In the German section of that patent, the device is referred to as "Vorrichtung zum Abteilen, Synchronisieren und Verdichten".

Densification

That would stick close to the German root of the word...
Densification is not actually "shifting them closer together", but neither is "Verdichten". In the context, it would become clear just as it does in the German version.

You can also talk about dense traffic, meaning cars are close together...

Densification Belt, Width Densification

to compact (compacting belt/width compacting)

alternativ:
to compress (compression belt/width compressing)

Apparatus according to claim 8, characterised in that it includes a transverse distributor (11), via which the fibres are supplied to the metering bunker (10), in which they are conveyed by means of a bottom belt (12) to the discharge head (A), and a compacting belt (13), which extends inclinedly downwardly between the transverse distributor (11) and the upper end of the discharge head (A) and acts on the surface of the material column (M) containing the fibres.

3. Pressing
This industrial process involves firstly turning the paraffin wax into granulate. The paraffin wax is heated, sprayed onto a drum cooled with water, from which it is then shaved off. This material is then compressed under high pressure to a candle and then dyed. This operation is suitable for tea lights, pillar candles and dinner table candles.

3. Pressen

Method of leveling and compacting candle wax
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6053217.html

1. A method for manufacturing a candle assembly comprising: cold compressing non-atomized wax droplets, solidified from raw wax material, into a mold about a portion of a wick to form a receptacle candle; forming a plurality of said receptacle candles spaced from one another along a roll of said wick; trimming said portion of said wick to have a length that protrudes beyond a first surface of said candle material, and another length that protrudes beyond a second surface of said candle material; and forming one of the lengths of said wick that protrudes beyond one of the surfaces of said candle material into a base angled with respect to a longitudinal axis of said portion of said wick, and embedding said base into said candle material.

Note from asker:
Thanks for your answer and all the research you did! Unfortunately my problem is that this text is not about the Herstellungsverfahren, because when the tea lights reach the packaging machine I am translating, they have already been manufactured and pressed and formed etc. The "Verdichten" at this stage only involves getting them all nicely lined up to fill them into the boxes...I would prefer to move away from the word "compression" altogether, as this suggests the procedures you have described. Ignoring the German choice of word, what would such a "pushing them all against each other"-belt be called in English texts?
