English term

backbone

English to Hebrew Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals biochemistry
This term appears in a title of a study, stating the type of anti-HIV medications will the patients receive.
The sentence is:

...efficacy of ritonavir boosted lopinavir and 2-3N(t)RTI backbone versus other medications....

To my understanding, in biochemistry backbone is שלד (of a protein).

I am wondering - how to translate backbone in this connection?

Thank you in advance.

Discussion

Olga Ryznar, MD (asker) Dec 26, 2009:
Well, I did not really resolve it. I found out that "backbone" is very rarely used in this connection in other language I speak - Russian, only in texts which had been translated for English, but not in Russian scientific texts. And haven't found evidence of such use in Hebrew. Eventually, I just discarded it.

השלד/עמוד התווך של מולקולת החלבון

אני מוסיפה הגדרה שמצאתי במילון
"backbone chain - in polymer chemistry, the framework of the molecule."

אפשר להגיד בקיצור שלד מולקולת החלבון.
מולקולת החלבון בנויה כשרשרת ארוכה של חומצות אמיניות. הן אבני הבנין של מולקולת החלבון. החומצות האמיניות מתחברות זו לזו בקשר פפטידי, הנוצר בין קבוצה אמינית בחומצה אחת לבין קבוצה קרבוקסילית בחומצה אחרת

המשמעות של עמוד התווך היא החלק המרכזי/הפנימי
"Amood hatavech" means the central/inner part of the protein molecule.
Note from asker:
Dear Pnina, thank you for answer, but as I mentioned above - I do know how to say "backbone" and what it means, What I don't know, is how to use it in connection to the medication name in the text, they say "N(t)RTI backbone", but I haven't found similar use in Hebrew texts. Additionally, N(t)RTIs are not even proteins, they are fake nucleotides/nucleozides. Any ideas?

I Googled DNA and שלד and found that שלד does appear in the context you need, I do however feel that there may be some confusion with cytosleleton which is also refered to as שלד.

These sources refer to the phosphate/ sugar (סוכר/זרחה) backbone of DNA.
