Dutch term

ontwikkelingsvoorsprong

Would it be correct to translate this as either 'developmental precocity' or 'developmental headstart'?

Discussion

Lianne van de Ven Jan 15, 2010:
Not a headstart I agree with Chris that "headstart" is used for interventions. Headstart programs are usually available for children who have a developmental disadvantage.
Barend van Zadelhoff Jan 15, 2010:
If you wanted to use "precocity", it should be just "precocity", without "developmental", as "developmental precocity" is something of a pleonasm. Anyway, precocity (early ripening) would imply a developmental stage not usually found in a child of this age.

developmental advantage

The average scores of children in the study that were in the group that used Baby Sign Language were found to be higher than the control group who did not. By the age of twenty-four months, the signing children had a developmental advantage of three months over the non-signing children. By the time these signing children reached the age of thirty-six months, this advantage had increased dramatically from a three month developmental advantage to an equivalent twelve month advantage in their overall language skills and comprehension.

These "literacy activities" are not complex, but many parents in rural and inner-city schools are lacking the fundamental principles of literacy development because they did not learn them or are not confident enough to use materials and resources that can be provided in the home and community environments. These simple activities can give their children a developmental advantage in reading, writing, and other components of language and communication before they enter kindergarten and first grade.

Research shows that Reach Out and Read parents are up to ten times more likely to read more to their young children. Children who participate in Reach Out and Read have an approximate six-month developmental advantage in language over their peers by the time they are 2 years old.

neutral writeaway : but this 'advantage' is for sign language. I think Asker's headstart is more appropriate in his particular context. otherwise what "advantage" did they have?

It was nothing more than an example really. But if you need further proof, see my note for other examples ...
agree Lianne van de Ven : @writeaway: they had a developmental advantage of 3-12 months.

Toch wel bedankt Ron :-)
neutral Tina Vonhof (X) : With the word advantage I think of some special circumstances or opportunities that advanced their development.

IMHO 'een voorsprong hebben' simply means having an advantage over others, in this case in terms of the child's stage of development (f.i. having better language skills than average etc. ) ...

(advanced) stage of development

It sounds to me like the teachers are trying to assess what stage of development the child is at. I don't think that in this context there is any question of a headstart. A headstart would imply that the child has undergone some intervention that has advanced its stage of development beyond what would normally be expected. English literature on the subject generally refers to 'stages of development' (see ref.).

So: "'Grofweg zijn er tien kenmerken te onderscheiden waardoor leerkrachten de ontwikkelingsvoorsprong bij een kleuter kunnen waarnemen," would be e.g. "There are ten characteristics that teachers can use to identify the stage of development of young children".

The next use is slightly different to the first, referring to an advanced stage of development: "Een eerste kenmerk is dat in veel gevallen kleuters met een ontwikkelingsvoorsprong enorm taalvaardig zijn.". So this would be e.g. "The first characteristic is that many young children at an advanced stage of development have exceptionally good language skills".

I could be wrong of course. Have the kids in question had some kind of headstart?

neutral Tina Vonhof (X) : This does not specify clearly that they are farther advanced than other children of the same age.

developmentally ahead

Ondanks writeaway's commentaar is "developmental advantage" (ten opzichte van het onzichtbare gemiddelde) volgens mij ook goed, maar dit is een alternatief.

I see him as developmentally ahead of himself in comparison with all of the other children that I've seen.

But middle-aged honey bees that serve as undertakers -- removing dead bees from the hive -- appear to be a distinct cadre of workers that are developmentally ahead of their peers.

If you are developmentally ahead, you would specify a date further out than today's date.
