Dutch term

evaluatie

Non-PRO Dutch to English Other Education / Pedagogy engineering education
I am translating a document on the 'evaluatie' of a specific project within an engineering program and the use of a portfolio to that end. A particular part of the document is on the "evaluatie en beoordeling van en via een portfolio". It defines 'evaluatie' as "a systematic activity for obtaining information that is as objective as possible".

I have yet to decide on how to translate 'evaluatie', 'beoordeling', and (later on in the document) 'waardering'.

I am currently tending towards 'assessment' for 'evaluatie', although it could just as well be 'evaluation'--or not?

The college I work for uses American English for its English-language publications.

Discussion

Stien Jan 22, 2010:
Is see--I wasn't aware of that, lianne and, yes, I do regret the points cannot be divided. I do hope Tina understands and I will take this into account next time. Thanks for pointing this out.
Lianne van de Ven Jan 21, 2010:
awarding points I would just like to take this space to comment that, Stien, if you chose "evaluation" as the correct translation, points should be awarded to Tina, even though my answer might have been more helpful. I am aware that you are new to the forum, so I am sure Tina understands, but these are the kudoz rules. Sometimes people regret they can't divide the points, but we all know, so we much appreciate the verbal feedback along with your choice :-) Best wishes with your translation.

1) nabespreking - evaluation, assessment
2) waardeschatting - evaluation, valuation

Difference assessment and evaluation:
"Assessment provides students, parents/guardians, and teachers with valid information concerning student progress and their attainment of the exptected curriculum/IEP. Assessment should always be viewed as information to improve student achievement."

"Evaluation on the other hand occurs when a mark is assigned after the completion of a task, test, quiz, lesson or learning activity. A mark on a spelling test will determine if the child can spell the given words and would be seen as an evaluation."

Gerelateerde terminologie: assess, rate, grade. Read the post by Kathryn Hillyer.
- I evaluate every piece that my students create, unless it's a preliminary piece.
- I try to align my assessments with the report card so that it's easier to do the grading each trimester.
- I also have students in 3rd-5th grade do some self-assessment.
- At the primary level, our report cards have 4 descriptors that we rate students with.
- At 4th and 5th grade we do that plus assign a letter grade.
- I keep a grade book (ours isn't online yet) and record everything.

Ik zou rate voor beoordelen gebruiken. Grade voor scores.

aangezien 4,5 miljoen portfolio evaluaties met financiën te maken hebben wou ik niet de tijd en moeite nemen een "passend" voorbeeld te vinden :-)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Upon studying your entry, lianne, (and the useful links—thanks!) and careful reconsideration of the text I came to the conclusion that the way in which ‘evaluatie’ is used definitely and solely refers to the 2nd meaning you referred to, i.e. ‘waardeschatting’’. (Rereading the original has even lead me to think that the title “evaluatie en beoordeling van en via…” might need reformulating—but I’ll have to get back to the authors on that.) So I’m going for ‘evaluation’ for ‘evaluatie’ so as to still be able to clearly make the distinction with its 1st sense (‘nabespreking => assessment) if necessary (I’m expecting more texts for translation on this subject and project). All your comments have been useful in guiding my thought process. This was a very positive first experience with proz.com. Think I’ll devote some more time to these pages from now on. (In any case, I still have to sort out what to do with ‘competentie’…) "

evaluation

I would go with 'evaluation and assessment'. They are often used together and interchangeably. I think that by evaluation they may mean evaluation of the use of a portfolio, i.e., how well that method works. By assessment they probably mean assessment of the student's performance on the portfolio. You don't give a sentence with 'waardering' but that usually refers to the marks that are given, e.g., satisfactory-good-excellent. (Answer based on my own experience in this field).
Note from asker:
Thanks, Tina. As you can see I have gone for 'evaluation' upon studying the original text once over. I'll make sure to add some more context next time, although this is not always possible without giving away too much information.

use of portfolios in engineering programmes

Portfolios allow students to demonstrate the quality of their work, much like artists do. A student portfolio is a systematic collection of a student's work to achieve a specific purpose. There are many types of portfolios, but for outcomes assessment in engineering the most useful portfolios are created by each individual student to achieve several purposes:

* first and foremost, to demonstrate that student's achievement of program-level outcomes
* second,
- for students to do reflective self-assessment (i.e., thinking about one's own learning) which is vital to the learning process
- to provide a program-level focus for student-faculty interactions in academic advising
- as a means for students to showcase their achievements to potential employers.
Such a portfolio requires that students compile and reflect on their best achievements during their program of study demonstrating that they have attained each specified program outcome. Note: A third purpose for portfolios, to document the learning process (growth and changes in attitudes), can be achieved in portfolios that require samples of work throughout a program of study. Such a developmental focus with reflections on the learning process is often deemed incompatible with the assessment focus of demonstrating achievement of program-level outcomes and reflecting on achievement.
