Italian term

proboviro /probiviro

Italian to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
NOT with the meaning of mediator/arbiter. I found the following definition of probiviri which fits my context: "Persone che godendo di particolare stima per la loro particolare onestà e capacità sono chiamati a fare parte di organismi di associazioni"
The sentence in my text is as follows: "Nella seduta del 14 aprile sono stati ascoltati: XXX, vice presidente della società italiana di XXX, XXX * probiviro * della XXX"
I was thinking along the lines of honarary member - any other suggestions will be gratefully received!

Discussion

Anne Micallef (asker) May 1, 2010:
Ok sorry, I thought you were suggesting an answer! I put it like that because there already is an entry in the glossary but not with the meaning I want. I didn't wany people to ignore it because of this. Point taken for future questions.
Russell Jones May 1, 2010:
Hi Anne. In the interests of the glossary, there should be nothing in the "term or phrase" box apart from the term or phrase itself. Everything else should go in the Explanation box please.
Since I can't edit the latter, I have copied your specific request here, since the Changes at the foot of the page tend to be overlooked. This procedure was suggested (and well received) in the Moderators' forum.
Anne Micallef (asker) May 1, 2010:
Sorry, but I don't see what you're suggesting here...
Russell Jones May 1, 2010:
Moderator's note Original entry: proboviro/probiviro (NOT with the meaning of mediator/arbiter)

Wise men

The term "proboviro /probiviri" does not translate well to areas of Common Law, and really does not exist outside of Codified Law. Frequently in business, "wise men" are appointed to adjudicate on matters of which they have particular knowledge or appointed by Governments to company or public boards for their nationally-known integrity.

Possibly, "Appeal Board member".

Please note the correct plural form.

Yet, in business organizations 'probiviri' actually play the 'role' of arbitrators

Art. 9
("Collegio dei Probiviri")
The members of this Committee are appointed by the Assembly at the recommendation of the Executive Committee.
The Committee consists of three members, who serve for two years.
The purpose of the "Collegio" is to settle informally any matters of contention arising between the Members and the Members and the Club.
The decisions of the "Collegio" are decided by majority vote and are irrevocable.
Members may ask the "Collegio" to explain how they came to their decision.
