From a description of a fashion collection in Spain. Balón comes up twice:

the second one, "botón de "balón"" is a kind of button covered in leather. One of the most classic models looks like a volley ball - of which I cannot find an image- but there are other models equally 'classic' that you often see on tweed jackets, English country style.
I suppose the first "apliques de balón" are like leather patches stitched on elbows or other places as 'ornaments' in the same style, but not sure here...

That makes sense yes! These are often used on sleeves.

It's a strecth but this might be it. A lot of people here in Spain like jackets with sports patches.
