Discussion

Lisa Mann (asker) May 6, 2010:
Maybe it should be with a v? But valón doesn't work either...I think I'll have to ask...
Noni Gilbert Riley May 6, 2010:
This silence is ominous I can't find anything, as in nothing, zilch. Which of course is why you ask!! Is there any chance it cd be a spelling mistake (I'm taking it wasn't hand written)....

leather button

the second one, "botón de "balón"" is a kind of button covered in leather. One of the most classic models looks like a volley ball - of which I cannot find an image- but there are other models equally 'classic' that you often see on tweed jackets, English country style.
I suppose the first "apliques de balón" are like leather patches stitched on elbows or other places as 'ornaments' in the same style, but not sure here...

That makes sense yes! These are often used on sleeves.
Note from asker:
I think you're right - they're called "football buttons" I found a couple of photos and the aplique de balón maybe means football buttons used as decoration (rather than an actual functioning button)...
Peer comment(s):

agree Victoria Frazier : De hecho, el botón es de piel con dos líneas que se cruzan en el centro dándole la apariencia de un balón.

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : You know I am so used to seeing those buttons that I never thought of their similarty to sports balls....

basketball / football (sports) patches/appliqués

It's a strecth but this might be it. A lot of people here in Spain like jackets with sports patches. If you look in the site dedicated to trophies (admittedly not clothing) you'll find "apliques serie balones y pelotas": http://www.trofeusannados.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemar... We stock over 5000 embroidered iron on appliqués including children, sports, holiday, animals, and flowers. We can do custom appliqués of ...

As I said, it was a long shot. What store or designer does the text refer to? If you could find images, it would help.
Note from asker:
But these are tweed, velveteen and herringbone jackets...it'd be weird to put that kind of patch on clothes like these, wouldn't it?
