Spanish term

afinidad colateral

Spanish to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s) Relations
From rules/regulations from Spain, for translation to British English.

I suppose "afinidad" means by marriage, but I do not have a clear idea of what "colateral" really means here, still less how it would be said in English.

"No podrán participar ... personal y empleados del ... ni sus familiares ya sea por consanguinidad o afinidad en línea recta o colateral hasta el segundo grado inclusive, ni sus cónyuges."

affinity or consanguinity in the direct line

in Canon Law of the Catholic Church affinity is a relatinship arising from the sexual intercourse of a man and a woman, sufficient for the generation of children, whereby the man becomes related to the woman's blood-relatives and the woman to the man's.
Consanguinity (which I believe "colateral" refers to in this context) refers to the property of being from the same kinship as another person. Another term for it might be "blood line".
