again, talking about perceived advantages of single currency:

I know this or similar terms have been posted, but I'm not sure that the translations provided work here. For a start, what is meant in this context? Is it simply "cuts" or something wider ranging - polices aimed at bringing the economy in line with the Maastricht criteria? (which is horribly long-winded)

This was to get public debt below a percentage of GDP. Italy's is about 103%. Of course it is all tied in with the rientro of the public deficit, countries spending more than the are collecting in revenues, where targets were to get these again below a percentage of GDP, much smaller, at around 2-3%. But obviously the objective here is a break-even or surplus.
