Discussion

Lancashireman Oct 10, 2010:
No ... ... we took a collective decision on the accession of Her Majesty QEII to the throne in 1952 to drop the 'motor' prefix.
KathyG (X) Oct 10, 2010:
All I have is Fahrzeug" in a short ad, sorry. I think "vehicle" is probably safer.
ArnoTranslat (X) Oct 10, 2010:
Fahrzeug A 'Fahrzeug' is inspecific, as it just means vehicle. A motor car would have to be, well, a car.
A motorcycle, a bicycle, a truck, all of those are 'Fahrzeuge'.

vehicle

this is the term used for "Fahrzeug", but as Arnold wrote here we have to know if you want refer only to a car or to vehicle as general term.
If you refer to a "Auto" you can use simply the term "car"

thank you Anna
neutral writeaway : without further info a Fahrzeug is a vehicle (see any dictionary). One would assume that a native English speaker is aware of the difference between a vehicle and a car .

neutral Cilian O'Tuama : Please choose your words (and your confidence level) more carefully: "this is the term used" is very much context dependent.

sometimes

sometimes they do, other times they don't.

they're unlikely to call a bicycle a car, motorised or not.

if you provide some useful context, we/they could narrow it down.

vehicle

Hi again Kathy,

Vehicle is Ok here. If it's definitely a car, then (motor) car. Motor vehicle is for "Kraftfahrzeug" when the specific type of vehicle is not known
