Explanation of 'vane'.

A 'vane' is a metal plate fixed to the lift-shaft which interacts with sensors on the lift cage to signal the position of the latter.

There's an example here (item 10 in this patent), where the 'vane ' is a flat ferrous metal plate that triggers an electromagntic sensor. A similar arrangement could no doubt be devised using opto-electronic devices.
