English term

there were almonds in the seeds

Non-PRO English to Persian (Farsi) Art/Literary Idioms / Maxims / Sayings IRIB2 - خوش‌نشین‌ها
Greetings,

This came up on the subtitles. In the new series, خوش‌نشین‌ها (The Squatters), a taxi driver, while eating seeds, was complaining that whereas in the old days fewer than one seed shell in a hundred was empty, now almost all of them were empty.

Someone then said, “I remember in the past there were almonds in the seeds.” At least that's what the subtitles said.

As you will never find almonds in the seeds, could this be a way of making fun of people who always talk as if the “good” old days were better than the present?

I am most intrigued by this.

All the best, and many thanks,

Simon

name of serial Many thanks. I'm just wondering if خوش‌نشین‌ها really means "squatters" as my dictionaries contradict one another. Is there perhaps a better translation for it?

Simon,

Your guess is completely right.
The person who has said this is actually pulling the driver's leg.

تمام تخمه ها مغز داشتند/هیچ تخمه ای پوچ نبود

it is just an example that all things were better in that past than now
تمام تخمه ها مغز داشتند is what is said in the movie which means no تخمه was empty
