Spanish term

vestuario

Spanish to English Marketing Marketing / Market Research Items sold at department store
Document from Chile:
El principal negocio de XXXXX es la venta al detalle de vestuario, accesorios y productos para el hogar a través de tiendas por departamento, malls y tiendas de especialidad, así como alimentos a través de híper y supermercados.

Note: The store sells NO clothing. It does sell bedding (ropa de cama), draperies, and rugs, as well as furniture and other household items such as dishes. It also sells computers, appliances, bicycles and toys. Basically, everything for the home, but no clothing.

Discussion

Falabella es una tienda por departamentos Y se ha convertido en un grupo económico, que posee supermercados en Chile y otros países, bajo otros nombres. Incluso existe el Banco Falabella.
Roxane Dow (asker) Dec 8, 2010:
See the company's website at "falabella.com" The company appears to sell only some baby clothes and sports-related clothing.
Vestuario no incluye "ropa blanca" Ropa de cama o ropa blanca significan lo mismo.
En todo caso, los grandes supermercados chilenos sí venden ropa para hombres, mujeres y niños :)

household linen

I wouldn't call towels, bedding, etc. clothing, but linen (bed linen, table linen).

Wouldn't this be called the household linen department in a department store?

En Chile hablamos de vestuario refiriéndonos a todo lo que una persona necesita para vestirse.

clothing

I prefer this for the context.
clothes -> items of clothing; apparel
Note that "apparel" sound quite old fashioned, and modern parlance prefers "clothes/clothing".
In Spain "vestuario" in theatrical/cinema terms usually refers to what in English is called "wardrobe" and clothing in general is simply called "ropa".

If the store sells NO clothing, I'd use "wardrobe", although I believe we are discouraged from multiple posting.

From Essentials: Updating Your Fall Wardrobe.
"A woman doesn't need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe if she's sick of the one she's got. She can easily jazz it up with all types of wardrobe accessories. A basic black sheath, for instance, can go from casual to businesslike to elegant---in a single day---with a simple switch of some common accessories. These can be purchased at department or clothing stores, thrift shops, garage sales or craft stores, or can even be made by the crafty connoisseur to turn any wardrobe into a "wow-drobe."

Peer comment(s):

neutral Charles Davis : My "neutral" is not a criticism; I just don't know the answer. But I thought you might be interested to know that in the UK "white goods" means refrigerators, washing machines etc. Apparently it did once mean linen, but I've never heard it used like that.
