Spanish term

palos de avellano

Thanks in advance.

hazel sticks

Literally; there are plenty of references to basket-weaving and other handicrafts using "hazel sticks":

"Basketry, ceremonial cap, made with plant material (bear grass, spruce or willow roots; willow or hazel sticks; woodwardia fern dyed with alder root..."

These "palos de avellano" are (thin) sticks for basket-making, not (thicker) walking sticks:

"Artesania
"Las tierras de Lleida aún conservan un gran abanico de artesanos que, diseminados por diferentes puntos de sus comarcas, mantienen estas tradiciones milenarias. [...] Los cesteros trabajan el mimbre y los palos de avellano.
Actividad artesanal - Comarca: Municipio [...]
Cestero - l'Alt Urgell: Vall d'Alinyà; la Val d'Aran: Arres"

Gracias, Antoni :)
agree Bubo Coroman (X) : you can put: "using willow and hazel wands", the "mimbre" being the willow wands... examples on Google

Thanks, Deborah :) Yes, "wands" is a perfectly good alternative in wickerwork. "Wands" and "sticks" seem to be roughly equally common.
agree Alistair Ian Spearing Ortiz : Yes, that's right.

Thanks, franglish :)
agree Wendy Streitparth : or even canes maybe? / I remember doing wickerwork with my mother as a child, with what were then called willow canes and they were less than half a cm. But things may be different now.

Many thanks, Wendy :) Possibly canes, or would they be a bit thicker? I've seen a reference to houses in Ireland woven from "hazel canes". // Well, I defer to your experience. Thanks!

Walking pole/Walking stick

These are wooden sticks, typically made from hazelnut branches. These branches are highly appreciated for walking sticks because they grow straight. Long ones are used by farmers and herdsmen for walking in the mountains, also for herding itself, and smaller ones for use in the house, city and level terrains. On local markets you sometimes find ones that are carved by hand with all sorts of patterns. Whether they mean walking sticks of walking poles really depends on size. I think in Spanish 'bastón' is mre often used for the small ones and 'palo' for the tall ones.
