I'm imagining it's some kind of shaft, but I'm really not sure. Can anyone help me with this?

agree  Bernhard Sulzer: so the basic form of the noun should be "das Verlegeschwert" / with (cable laying) plow blade (plough blade)

ripper

Explanation:
A 'Schwert' makes me think of a 'ripper' and not a shaft or a tube.

Take a look at the google search results for 'cable laying ripper' and 'pipe laying ripper':

Your context should tell you whether it's for laying cables or pipes. If not, I suggest that you use just 'ripper' as the translation. I wouldn't call it a 'laying ripper' - kind of feels inadequate: keeps you wondering what is being laid.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pipe-and-cable-laying_plough
A pipe-and-cable-laying plough is a trenchless method to bury cables or pipes. The machinery is a form of a subsoiler with a single blade. It is used to lay buried services of virtually any description, for drainage, water, electricity, telecommunications, gas supply etc.. A coil of the service pipe/cable is mounted on the tractor and is led down a guide behind the blade, and is left buried behind the plough, without the need to dig a deep trench and re-fill it.
