Although the inability to fully assimilate traumatic experiences is suffi -
cient to account for the process of internalizing the object, Fairbairn (1952)
also provides an additional motive for the process when he writes that the
child takes the “badness” of the parent into himself or herself in order to
keep the representation of the parent as good. The child needs to do this,
according to Fairbairn, because to experience one’s parents as unconditionally
rejecting and unloving is intolerable. As Fairbairn (1952) puts it, “It is
better to be a sinner in a world ruled by God than to live in a world ruled by
the Devil” (pp. 66–67). If being rejected and unloved can be attributed to
one’s badness, then there is hope that by being good, one can earn parental
love. If, however, rejection is *unconditional*, there is no hope.
