I think this would be hard to work in here, but it is a common error message you find on your PC, for example.

Hélène, the dedicated terms that I've come across in this sort of field are 'dépasser' or 'expirer'; I think 's'écouler' rather changes the meaning, and takes it further away from 'standard' terminology.

Maybe? When something "times out" it usually means your access to it has expired after a given period of time. For example, if you log into your bank account and you are inactive for say, 10 minutes, your session will "time out," thereby logging you out of the system. I am not 100% in this context though, so I would wait to see what others say.
