Italian term
fonico

legal transcripts
Appears in brackets during or at the end of sentences in a legal transcript. I understand it to mean "speech sounds" (or possibly just "sound"), i.e. that someone is speaking on the recording but when the transcript has been played back what they are saying is unclear. Does anyone know the best/standard way to render this in English legal transcripts?

This is how I have seen it used, meaning the sound is not clear and/or cannot be fully heard/understood.

sound engineer
the word fonico is also the name given to the people who record sound - so the sound engineer himself/herself is the "fonico". don't know if that helps in this context

John Moore
: probably not in this context: 'fonico' means 'sound engineer' specifically in film industry jargon... SEE the best IT>EN dictionary, 'IL SANSONI INGLESE', which defines 'fonico' as "s.m. (f. -a) (Cin.) sound technician, sound engineer'

: even from the minimal context it is very unlikely that this is what is meant

court reporter
se si tratta di fonico trascrittore la definizione generica è questa ma lo stesso court reporter può essere un sound/audio engineer...
