Merriam Webster's Definition of PARE
transitive verb
1 : to trim off an outside, excess, or irregular part of <pare apples> <paring his nails>
2 : to diminish or reduce by or as if by paring <pare expenses> <the novel was pared down to 200 pages>
If paring expenses is reducing expenses, then paring gains is reducing gains, i.e. declining.
The confusing part is that sometimes this term is used in the opposite sense (I think erroneously) as an improvement, as in this example:
The European currency pared gains slightly against the USD on Tuesday after data showed U.S. home prices plunged a record 19% in January from a year earlier.
