Italian term
Intenti conoscitivi
Italian to English
Social Sciences
Psychology
Research
"[A scopo] di rendere disponibile una panoramica di strumenti (descritti in termini psicometrici e contenutistici) di modo da agevolare una scelta consapevole circa i propri intenti conoscitivi, siano essi clinici o di ricerca."
This is a research paper for a clinical journal. The instruments we are talking about are questionnaires. This kind of flowery italian is always hard for me to handle, particularly when clients desire this to be kept in the translation. My tendency is to always simplify.
Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions?

what you wish to find out
"...in order to facilitate an informed decision about what you wish to find out, whether it is of a clinical or research nature."
This is not a technical term, just plain simple ordinary Italian. I would have translated with "research objectives", but they may be the objectives of clinical investigation (probably all diagnostic, but the divide between diagnosis and therapy is blurred in psychology/psychiatry).
I have a very old degree in psychology.

motives
...to facilitate awareness of one's own motives, whether clinical or research-oriented.
this is baroque academic vaporware to say "to allow researchers to understand whether they expect clinical results or research results to emerge from the investigation"
I have a postgrad diploma in counseling and have published research in IT a life ago.
I agree with you but beware, simplifying is sometimes perceived as a subversive attitude.
