Je connais le sens habituel du verbe to buckle, mais il me laisse perplexe ici. Je pense à "déformer" : peut-être les fumées de kérosène forment-elles des volutes, des tourbillons qui déforment l'air, dans un sens imagé ?

Well, you get just the same effect with volatile vapours, like petrol or kerosene — you might have noticed it while filling a car petrol tank, for example.
I feel pretty sure 'buckle' is being used here in this way: images viewed through this vapour-laden air appear distorted or buckled.
