Istnieje wiele typów wiertnic w zależności od przeznaczenia, średnicy otworów, budowy itp. Stanowisko w terenie, na którym ustawiona jest wiertnica nosi nazwę wiertni. Przygotowanie stanowiska polega na odpowiednim wypoziomowaniu terenu, wykonaniu ocembrowanego zagłębienia - bodni oraz umieszczeniu odpowiednio stabilnego fundamentu pod konstrukcję wiertnicy.
